Brain Facts

  1. Our modern human brains are energy guzzlers’ using up about 20% of the oxygen in our blood and 25 percent of circulating blood glucose [sugar].
  2. 94% of the brains oxygen is used by the brains grey matter and 6% by the white matter.
  3. The brain is the fattest organ in the body – its composition being 60% fat.
  4. The brain has enough electrical power to light a 25-watt bulb.
  5. Your brain generates more electrical impulses in a singe day than all the telephones in the world.
  6. Most of the information processing in the brain happens in the cerebral cortex – the brains thin grey rind.
  7. The cerebral cortex makes up 85% of the brain
  8. The cortex is grey because nerves in this area lack the insulation that makes most other parts of the brain white.
  9. The brains grey matter contains 100 billion nerve cells [neurons] – about the same number of stars in our galaxy.
  10. The brains white matter contains millions of nerve fibers [axons and dendrites]
  11. Neurons never work alone. Each individual neuron may be linked to between 1,000 and 10,000 other neurons
  12. A typical brain functions with one quadrillion neural connections.
  13. A pinhead could hold 30,000 neurons.
  14. If you laid out end to end, all the neurons in a typical brain – they would stretch over 600 miles.
  15. A typical brain neuron fires between 5-50 times per second.
  16. The left-brain hemisphere has about 186 million more neurons than the right hemisphere.
  17. In early pregnancy the developing brain produces about 250,000 neurons per minute.
  18. There are no pain sensors in your actual brain; the brain itself does not feel pain.
  19. The amygdala [part of the emotional brain involved in flight and flight response] is larger in male brains, shrinks in the elderly and is enlarged in the brains of sociopaths.
  20. Smelling chocolate can result in increasing your Theta brain waves – which trigger relaxation.
  21. Brain scans have shown that the brain produces so much dopamine during orgasm it resembles someone on heroin.
  22. It is thought that yawning sends more oxygen to the brain – waking it up.
  23. When you get blackout drunk, your brain loses its ability to create memories.
  24. It only takes the brain 6 minutes to react to alcohol.
  25. When you sleep, your body produces a hormone that virtually paralyses you – to stop you from acting out your dreams.
  26. If you are snoring you are not dreaming.
  27. If the blood supply to the brain is stopped, you only have 10 seconds before becoming unconscious.
  28. Excessive stress is known to alter brain structure, brain cells and function.
  29. The hippocampus is the one area of the brain that can continually form some neurons – it is one of the few brain regions that provide a potential source for neural stem cells.
  30. London taxi drivers are known to have larger than normal hippocampus [one of the brain areas where memories are stored].
  31. The more you memorise the more your brain continues to grow.
  32. The brain is built for continual learning – it is unlikely to ever run out of memory space.
  33. Cognitive tests demonstrate that 30% of 80 year olds perform as well as young adults.
